Why you need a CFO email list

Chief Financial Officers approve budgets, track P&L, and keep the financial health of the business front of mind in every decision. Find their verified contact details, build your list, and send outreach emails that win their attention with Hunter.

Sell above the approval limit

Past a few thousand a month, most deals need finance sign-off whichever team started the conversation. Reach the CFO early and your champion isn't left arguing your case in a meeting you can't attend.

Sell finance and back-office software

ERP, AP automation, spend management, payroll, close and treasury tools all sit in the CFO's stack, and the CFO decides what stays in it at renewal.

Win banking, audit, insurance, and advisory work

Accounting firms, auditors, insurance brokers, and commercial lenders are all selling into the same seat. The shared finance inbox forwards almost none of it.

Recruit finance leadership

Reach sitting CFOs, VPs of Finance, Finance Directors, and Controllers directly for search and advisory work, with no InMail limits in the way.

Hunter is a great tool for saving time and building pipelines and prospecting. Before we had Hunter in place I was spending a long time guessing emails and using up valuable time every day. The email verifier is also a game changer for our team.

Frequently asked questions about CFO email addresses

Start in Hunter's Discover by filtering companies to your ICP by industry, company size, and location. Once you have the accounts that fit, search the contacts inside them and filter by the Chief Financial Officer role. You get the finance leaders at companies worth targeting, each with a verified email address, ready to save to a Leads list.

Most companies below mid-market don't. The role gets absorbed by whoever sits closest to the money, usually a Controller or a VP of Finance, and sometimes a fractional CFO splitting time across several companies. Widen the role filter to cover those titles and the account stays in your list instead of coming back empty.

The Controller owns the numbers that already happened. That's the monthly close, plus the reporting and compliance work hanging off it. The CFO owns what those numbers mean next, which is mostly forecasting and where the money goes. In a company with no CFO the Controller usually absorbs the strategic side too, which is a good reason to keep them in your list rather than filter them out.

A few routes cost nothing. Check the Contact Info section of their LinkedIn profile, run a Google search like "name" + "@company.com", or look at the investor relations and leadership pages, which name the finance chief more reliably than they name most roles. These work for the occasional lookup but get slow past a handful. Discover has a free plan, so you can build the list of companies you care about and reveal verified addresses without the manual digging.

Yes. Discover detects the technologies running on a company's site, so you can build an account list around a specific finance stack, such as companies on NetSuite, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks, Bill.com, or Ramp, and then pull the finance leader inside each one. That matters more for CFOs than for most roles, because the stack is usually the thing you're pitching against or integrating with.

Each CFO email address comes with a confidence score that estimates how likely it is to be valid and deliverable. For certainty before you send, run any address through the Email Verifier, which checks it against the mail server in real time. The higher the confidence score, or once it’s verified, the more likely your outreach lands directly in the inbox and your sender reputation stays intact.

Each address is verified against the mail server at the moment you reveal it, and the confidence score tells you how safe it is to send. Continuous refresh matters more here than for most roles: CFO turnover runs high enough that a file built last year will have gaps in it by the time you send.

Lead with the number. A CFO wants to know what it costs and how fast it pays back before deciding whether to keep reading, and vague framing gets deleted faster than a soft pitch to any other role. The personalization still has to land: emails with two personalized details reply at 5.6% against 3.6% with none, and 67% of decision-makers say personalization drawn from public information makes them more likely to answer. Say what the tool replaces too. Every new line is another one on a budget the CFO already defends, so an email that names the spend you're removing reads differently from one that only adds. Sounding too sales-focused is the top reason outreach fails, named by 65% of decision-makers, so keep it specific and drop the category pitch. And don't send it during close. The last days of a month and the first week of a quarter are the worst time to land in a finance inbox; mid-month is quieter. The full breakdown is in Hunter's State of Email Outreach report, built on 31 million emails.

There's a floor on how short a subject line should go. Five or six words is the sweet spot in Hunter's data, and two personalized details push open rates to 40%, up from 35% with one. Skip the tired "Quick question" template, which underperforms.

Most replies don't come from the first email. Sending three messages instead of one lifts total replies by 106% (6.8% against 3.3%), but a fourth and fifth start to hurt. Two well-timed follow-ups is the ceiling.

Rules vary by country. In the US, CAN-SPAM allows B2B email outreach as long as you identify yourself, use an honest subject line, include a working opt-out, and add a valid postal address. In the EU and UK, GDPR and PECR allow it where you have a legitimate interest and the message is relevant to the person's role. Either way, stay relevant and honour opt-outs. This isn't legal advice, so confirm the rules for the regions you target.

You can, but a pre-built list starts decaying the day it's sold. People move and titles change, and unverified addresses bounce and dent your sender reputation, which is a poor opening move on someone whose job is spotting waste. Building your own in Discover gets the same result without the risk: you set the filters, and every address is verified the moment you reveal it.

The confidence score estimates how likely an email address is to be valid and deliverable. A 95%+ score means Hunter is highly confident the address is correct. Lower scores are flagged so you can decide whether to send or verify further.

Yes. Export any list to CSV, or connect Hunter to your CRM to sync contacts directly. From there you can load them into Hunter Sequences or your own outreach tool.
